Frequently Asked Questions
Hello,
I am interested in RIDE Certification. I have been in the design business for five years. I am researching the different exams and came across your certification. What are the qualifications to take the exam? I noticed you had to take a certification course but did not see anything on years of experience or schooling. Is there a specific location where you take the exam and do you take both parts at the same time?
This course is available to both experienced designers and new designers, as most college courses would be. After the completion of this course, you are qualified to take the exam. We introduced this course in 1999. Last year the course was revised and introduced nationwide. Since that date over 1,000 designers have taken the course, which was recently chosen for conversion to an online college-administered course for residential interior designers across the country. The course will cost much more once it is launched to the colleges and will be limited by the online schedule. The exam is currently available at testing centers across the country. When you complete your course, you will contact your course mentor - a free service to students taking the RIDE - and if there is not a testing center close to you, the exam can be administered online. You have three opportunities to pass the exam. Fifty percent of your grade is based on your chapter lesson projects that you mail to us. The second half is based on the exam.
Am I qualified to take the RIDE?
Yes, the taking and completion of the RIDE course is for both established designers desiring to increase their competitive edge and those who desire to take the course as a first timer, wishing to break into the industry. This comprehensive course works as a wonderful refresher for established designers and as a diverse and informative course for those seeking a career in residential interior design.
How long does the RIDE course take?
The RIDE course is designed specifically for home study. You are the deciding factor on the amount of time it will take. We have students who have completed the course and exam within three months and others who have taken more than a year. Disciplining yourself and allotting study time is suggested for those completing the program. We provide FREE mentorship for students.
Where is the final exam taken?
Half of your grade is based on the projects and lesson questions at the end of each chapter. The remaining 50 percent is based on your exam. At the time of your course completion, you are to contact your course mentor and request your exam and testing location. If there is not a local testing center in your area, the exam will be provided to you online.
How many times can I take the exam?
You may take the exam three times for your initial program fee. If you have not passed the exam after the third time, your mentor will discuss the areas you have had trouble with and place a request for re-testing. Most requests for retesting are accepted. If your request to retest after three tries is denied, your fee for further testing will be $75.
Do I need to purchase anything in addition to the workbook provided?
You will need the Interior Design text, author John F. Pile, 4th edition. Amazon.com usually has the best price and offers new and used copies.
